In a recent press statement, Goa Congress President Amit Patkar, joined by traditional fishermen, raised strong objections against the government’s handling of issues impacting Goa’s fishing community. They criticized the administration, led by Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, accusing it of neglecting local fishermen’s rights and failing to protect coastal livelihoods. Patkar specifically highlighted the lack of effective policies to support traditional fishermen amid rising challenges, such as illegal fishing by boats from neighboring states.
The Congress has called for CM Sawant’s resignation, stating that the government’s inaction has left Goan fishermen at a disadvantage, especially with insufficient safeguards against external fishing operations that threaten local resources and fishermen’s safety. They have urged the state to reinforce regulations that would provide better protection and opportunities for the traditional fishing sector, essential to the local economy.
