In his recent comments, Calangute MLA Michael Lobo criticized the state’s waste management efforts, highlighting the ongoing garbage crisis across Goa. He pointed out that the Waste Management Ministry has become ineffective, with piles of garbage appearing in various locations, including beaches and roadsides. He noted that local governance bodies have stopped issuing fines for illegal dumping, and the Solid Waste Management Corporation (SWMC) hasn’t held meetings for over two years, indicating a lack of action on this front.
Lobo further called for a more coordinated approach, suggesting that wet waste from the South should be transported to the Curchorem plant, and from the North to the Saligao plant. He stressed the underutilization of the Curchorem plant, which has the capacity to handle more waste but has been operating below its potential.
