The issue of artificially ripened fruits being sold in Goa has been a concern for health authorities. There have been instances of chemical use for fruit ripening, particularly with common fruits like bananas, papayas, and chikoo. The Food and Drugs Administration (FDA), along with local authorities such as the Corporation of City of Panaji (CCP), has been actively conducting raids across markets, including in Panjim, to seize fruits that have been artificially ripened using dangerous chemicals. These chemicals pose serious health risks, especially to children, and the authorities have emphasized the need for strict action against sellers who engage in this harmful practice.
Additionally, the raids also targeted vendors who were found using banned plastic bags. These vendors are being fined for non-compliance with environmental laws, highlighting ongoing efforts to ensure both public health and environmental safety. While the government has taken some action, there are ongoing concerns about the effectiveness of these measures and whether more needs to be done to prevent such practices.
