Diwadkars Prepare for Travel Challenges as St. Francis Xavier Exposition Nears.

Residents of Diwadi Island, popularly known as Diwar, are likely to face logistical challenges as Goa gears up for the decennial Exposition of St. Francis Xavier. This grand event, attracting millions of pilgrims worldwide, is scheduled from November 21, 2024, to January 5, 2025, with much of the activity centered in Old Goa.

Jerry D’Souza, a local civic leader, has highlighted potential travel disruptions in the surrounding areas of Divar and Old Goa. He emphasized the need for improved traffic management and public transport services to handle the expected surge of pilgrims and tourists. Residents, particularly from Divar, have expressed concerns about limited ferry services and restricted vehicular access to Old Goa during the event.

Chief Minister Pramod Sawant recently announced that 90% of the exposition’s preparations are complete, including road repairs and enhanced transport facilities. However, with heavy traffic expected on routes connecting ferry points and mainland roads, Diwar residents could face delays and congestion

Additionally, the exposition coincides with other major events like the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) and the Serendipity Arts Festival, further straining Goa’s transportation infrastructure. Despite these overlaps, the government has promised swift action to resolve pending issues, including addressing the poor road conditions near key transit points like Ribandar.
