Yuri Alemao Seeks Fair Share of Funds for Goa from 16th Finance Commission

Leader of the Opposition, Yuri Alemao, has called for a fairer allocation of central funds for Goa during discussions with the 16th Finance Commission. He pointed out that despite Goa’s high per capita income, the state lacks proper infrastructure and faces financial strain.

Alemao highlighted that Goa receives only 0.368% of the 42% central tax distribution among states, which amounts to approximately ₹3,300 crore. He argued that this is insufficient, given the state’s financial burden and increasing debt, which has reached nearly ₹32,000 crore.

He also stressed that Goa’s smaller population and limited land area should be taken into account when determining financial assistance for the period from 2026 to 2031. Alemao assured that they present a realistic demand for a fairer share of funds to ensure better development opportunities for the state.
