On December 21, 2024, several Goa Congress leaders, including State President Amit Patkar, Opposition Leader Yuri Alemao, and Vice President Sunil Kawthankar, were detained by the police during a protest march towards Chief Minister Pramod Sawant’s official residence in Altinho, Panaji.
The protestors were voicing their concerns over issues such as land grabbing, illegal land conversions, the deteriorating law and order situation, corruption, and job scams. They also criticized Union Home Minister Amit Shah for his alleged disrespect towards Dr. B.R. Ambedkar during the winter session of Parliament.
As the Congress workers began their march, police blocked their path near Azad Maidan using ropes. Subsequently, they were detained and taken to Agasaim police station. The official at the North Goa collectorate office had previously rejected the Congress party’s request for the protest march.
